Advice from Whitney Wolfe Herd, CEO & Founder of Bumble
Whitney Wolfe Herd (Founder and CEO of Bumble) and Katrina Lake (Founder and CEO of Stitch Fix) spoke at Stanford this week…and OMGGGG I love when women women. They’re both women CEOs and founders of public companies… AND they’re besties who support each other professionally and personally. It made me imagine myself on that stage one day interviewing one of my besties who is killing it professionally. This is why representation of “leaders who look more like me” matters❤️
My key takeaways from the talk:
Lean into being underestimated. Whitney says she’s been underestimated for years and years — and she actually likes it because larger companies didn’t spend time stifling her company’s growth when they didn’t see her as real competition at the time: “when people aren’t watching you and you’re not being analyzed, you can just run.” Next steps for you? Grind under the radar and don’t be upset when you get no’s. You’re not doing it to prove other people wrong, you’re proving to yourself what you’re capable of. You got this.
There are more downs than ups in startups: building a startup is hard and it’s even harder to take risks when you run a public company that has quarterly earning calls and commitments to investors. Makes me honestly question if I want to build my own venture-backed company one day. Is that the life I want to have? TBD…
Brand means everything. Bumble created a brand that means safety and leveling the dating playing field for women. This brand permeates through their internal and external culture. My takeaway: think about what your brand is and how you want to be perceived by others. Next, how do you pull that consistent branding through everything you do both personally and professionally?
Advice from Jeremy Erlich, Spotify’s Global Head of Music
Jeremy came into my Media Economics class to speak and gave us some kick ass advice I want to pass onto y’all:
There are no shortcuts, there is also no straight line
It’s always better to be interested than interesting
Being an artist is the hardest job on earth; always remember that when dealing with the business side
Always surround yourself with people smarter than you
You never know where the next opportunity can come from
Have fun and enjoy the moments
Here Jeremy showcases the top 10 Playlists on Spotify. His background is in finance and investment banking. He broke into the media world and has always been seen as an outsider (but he sees that as his strength) up until recently. Now he works as Head of Global Music at Spotify. I enjoyed his candid talk and there were a LOT of f-bombs flying around casually. He reminded me of other tech executives I’ve looked up to and worked with in the past.
What I’m consuming
Article my Stanford professor sent me: They Lost Their Jobs, Then Went Viral on TikTok: Some workers are using the platform to share stories about job cuts, give advice and search for new roles
Book I’m Reading for my Media Economics class: Netflixed: The Epic Battle for America's Eyeballs — I’m talking to the author Gina Keating next week! More to come on this.
Negotiating salary video shared in my negotiation class (1.4M views): I didn’t watch the entire thing because it is long but if you find it helpful, let me know: “Every situation is unique, but some strategies, tactics, and principles can help you address many of the issues people face in negotiating with employers.”
My newest purchase
New Balance 2002r: White/Vibrant Apricot
My latest obsessions. Super comfortable for walking around and love the pop of color. Not sponsored by Kith. Bought them from Kith, who had a 2 week delay and didn’t notify me of this which I thought was a really odd and poor user experience. I’m usually a size 6.5/7 in women’s shoes and I ordered these in a size 5 in men’s. Because why do men have all the cool shoe designs??
My biggest flex here is that I purchased these shoes way before I saw Teddy Santis, Founder of streetwear brand Aimé Leon Dore, wear them in this IG photo. I’m not saying I’m a trendsetter but I would say these are Teddy approved.
What I’m perplexed by
Reminder that this $75(?????) candle by Gwyneth Paltrow’s brand, Goop, exists. Not only does it EXIST but there’s a waitlist. My birthday is in the summer and if you want to get me this candle as a gift, I wouldn’t say no… hey, branding is everything and this is hilarious.
